Preparation for General Anesthesia

Please note that appropriate testing and preparation must be completed prior to being anesthetized for the medical imaging procedure.

The following are the minimum requirements:

  • Please offer no food after 10pm the night before the procedure. Water can be provided up to hospital admission.
  • The testing should meet the requirements listed below.
  • Information from the testing should include :
    • Hard copies of the labwork results.
    • Information regarding when, where and by whom the labwork was performed.
  • Fill in the Online Imaging Request form and submit it to us or fill out the Imaging Request pdf form and fax it to us at (612) 626-6733.
  • Please note if fine needle aspirates are planned, a platelet count will be indicated within 72 hours of the procedure.  If core biopsies are planned, a coagulation profile will be indicated within 72 hours of the procedure.
Classification of Physical Status for Patients Undergoing Anesthesia*
Category Description Examples
I Healthy patient
  • No organic disease (e.g. normal dog with chronic lameness)
II Mild or moderate systemic disease without functional impairment
  • Cardiac disease, compensated (no medication)
  • Geriatric
  • Obesity
  • Orthopedic disease
  • Pediatric
III Organic disease with definite functional impairment
  • Anemia, mild
  • Anorexia
  • Cardiac disease, compensated (with medication)
  • Dehydration, mild
  • Fever, mild
  • Neurologic symptoms (Seizures, Vestibular syndrome, Ataxia, Paresis)
IV Severe disease that is life - threatening
  • Anemia, severe
  • Cardiac disease, decompensated
  • Pulmonary disease
  • Renal Failure
  • Sepsis
  • Shock
V Moribund patient, not expected to survive
  • Major trauma
  • Multi - organ failure
  • Profound shock
  • Severe head injury

Testing Requirements For Patients < 5 Years Of Age
 Physical Status Category Required Tests Tests Performed Within
I or II BUN, Glucose, PCV, TP 30 days of referral
III CBC(1), ECG, Small Animal Profile(2), UA(4) 7 days of referral
IV or V CBC(1), Chest Radiographs, ECG, Small Animal Profile(2) 48 hours of referral
Testing Requirements For Patients 5 Years Of Age
 Physical Status Category Required Tests Tests Performed Within
I or II PCV, Pre-Anesthetic Profile(3), UA(4) 30 days of referral
III CBC(1), ECG, Serum Electrolytes, Small Animal Profile(2), UA(4) 7 days of referral
IV or V CBC(1), Chest Radiographs, ECG, Small Animal Profile(2), UA(4) 48 hours of referral

(1) CBC should include at least: Hematocrit, white cell count, differential.

(2) Small Animal Profile should include at least: Alb, ALP, ALT, AMY, AST, TBIL, BUN, HCO3, Ca, CHOL, CREAT, GGT, Glu, Phos, Mg, TP, Na, K, Cl.

(3) Pre-anesthetic profile should include at least: ALB, ALT, CREAT, Glu, Na, K.

(4) Urinalysis(UA) should include: Urine specific gravity.
