Pet retail chains are starting to recall bulk pig ears—commonly given to dogs as treats—in 33 states after an outbreak of salmonella in pet owners. “Please don’t feed these to dogs,” says Julie Churchill, DVM, PhD, DACVN, associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. Churchill is one of roughly 80 board certified veterinary nutritionists in the country. “I worry especially about young puppies, children, elder dogs, senior citizens, and those with chronic diseases whose immune systems may be more fragile.” Humans can contract the disease both through the handling of the product as well as coming into contact with an infected animal. So far, 45 cases of salmonella have been reported in 13 states.
