As the anti-vaccination movement gains momentum around the country, pets are finding themselves caught in the crosshairs. Veterinarians are being faced with a few dog owners refusing rabies vaccinations, because they think it will give their dogs canine autism. Kristi Flynn, DVM, assistant professor in the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, says, “Vaccination has been proven to be a safe and effective way to protect against severe and, in some instances, fatal diseases. There has been no documented case of autism in dogs or cats. Additionally, the human literature has proven there is no connection between vaccination and autism.” Pet owners who do not vaccinate their dogs can be endangering other animals, as well as people.
