Skala deployed to emergency shelter

March 25, 2019

On March 17, 2019, Scott County Public Health Department requested veterinary assistance after a trailer park flood in Jordan, Minn., left many pets in temporary shelters. Vickie Skala, veterinary technician at the U of M Veterinary Medical Center, is a team lead for the U of M Medical Reserve Corps' (MRC) Veterinary Medicine Response Strike Team. She was able to quickly respond and complete assessments on eight dogs and one cat, as well as provide general emergency guidance to the shelter staff. Skala had been previously deployed to Iowa to support emergency animal shelters during their floods in 2008. As the threat of damaging floods continues to spread across much of the mid-west, the U of M MRC is ready to deploy high-quality medical support for humans and animals alike.
